I am so full of gratitude for the many sources of information we have in the world here and now in the year 2015. Yes, there is so much that we have to take responsibility for what we believe. Not everything is even factual, let alone True.
What is the difference between fact and truth? I understand the difference to be this. A fact is something that is very specific to its components; 2 + 2 = 4, red + yellow = orange, These are facts no matter where you are on the planet. Though the words are different in different languages and the shade of orange may vary.
Truth is based one's belief system, which is base on what we have been taught and perceived in experience. My truth has evolved greatly in these 70 years of life in this body. I grew up in a small town in North Dakota. An all white community that had many prejudices. 1. Lutherans and Catholics did not inter-marry very often and when it did happen families were very resistant in accepting the one from the "Other" religion. 2. If a little girl was a bit too lively, she was called a "wild Indian" - Implying that Indians were unacceptable humans and one should not associate with or act like them.
Thus until only about 10 years ago, my truth was that the Catholic religion, and therefore Catholics, were just unacceptable and caused a lot of pain for others. This may have been based in some factual events that did happen, but I carried it over to an entire group of people. My belief based on observance and experience with a very few people caused me to label all of these people as "wrong". When I attended a Catholic Mass for the first time and met the Priest and others, I changed my belief about "all Catholics are...".
I also have two grandchildren that are 1/2 Chippewa Nation in Wisconsin. They are wonderful young people and I love them dearly.
The phrase "Like-minded people" is one I hear many people say and for much of my life I felt the same way. We want to feel comfortable and choose not to associate with anyone different looking, having different ideas, different sounding, just different.
I am grateful that my truth changed and I now celebrate and love to meet "different" people and I just love being different. I like to say "Nobody thinks like I do, and that is wonderful. I will learn so much more in these next ?#? of years.
So I close this post with this. Do check facts, try not to perpetuate false statements. And continue to question your own truths, your own beliefs. My heart and my world opened so much wider since I began this basic practice. It is a practice so please do not give up on it if it seems difficult at first. ~~Rev. C~~
